Berhampur : Child friendly city

Berhampur: 6.3.2014:OBB(Ananda Prasad):Berhampur , Child friendly city. HBC organized ‘Meet the Mayor’ in Berhampur: Shilpa Maharana, a small kid living in Hanuman Nagar Slum in Berhampur reported to the newly elected City Mayor K.Madhavi  about poor sanitation, poor garbage cleaning mechanism, non availability of dustbins, poor ventilated temporary thatched houses.Mayour having reciprocated the feeling of Shilpa and her friends during the innovating interaction programme “Meet The Mayor” organized by children living in slums.http://odishabulletin.com/berhampur-child-friendly-city/This interaction was organized by the National Campaign Humara Bachpan in collaboration with city based organization PREM and Youth for Social Development. Similarly Jhilli Behera from Pichipicha Nagar slum of Berhampur Municipal Corporation raised the issue of uncovered and hazardous drainage, unsafe roads and demanded allotment of land for the slum dwellers where as Dhiren Das, of Phulasundari Sahi put questions to the Mayor regarding housing and drainage issues. It is noted that there are no specific plans, policies and programme for children by the Berhampur Municipal Corporation and implementation of existing programme are poor and the budgetary provisions and allocation are almost nil.The City Development Plan of Berhampur is lacking specific policies, programmes for children.http://odishabulletin.com/berhampur-child-friendly-city/There is clear reflection of non-recognition and even violation of vital children’s rights and poor implementation of existing programmes like right to water, right to food (PDS,ICDS, MDM) , right to housing (IHSDP, RAY), rights to survival, health and education and right to information. However the Centre has approved 12 projects of around 6,300 pucca houses under Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY) for Phailin-hit slum dwellers here. The houses to be built in 68 slum clusters will cost around Rs 194 crore. In some media reports Mr Sangram Kumar Panda, the assistant commissioner and in-charge of slum development project of Berhampur Municipal Corporation has stated that they will submit three more projects for 15 slum clusters to the Centre for approval. If these projects are approved, there would be 15 projects of 83 slum clusters with around 8,000 units. There are 163 slum pockets in the town which house over 40,000 families. At present, construction of 1,202 houses is going on under the integrated housing scheme for the urban poor at 24 locations. Around 35,000 houses belonging to these people in 163 slums were damaged in the cyclone. So the campaign has been advocating for child friendly infrastructure in all of the above plans and children to be included as major beneficiary while implementing these policies into action.
